Shows Like The Boys: A Brief Watchlist
Short thesis
If what you want is The Boys’ mix of corrupt superheroes, extreme violence, corporate/political satire, and profane ensemble comedy, the closest next watches are Gen V, Invincible, and Peacemaker. If you want the darker “superheroes reveal the rot in society” angle more than the joke density, add Watchmen. If you want the same nasty comic-book energy without necessarily staying in superheroes, add Preacher and Misfits.
Best matches, ranked
- Gen V — closest overall. It is literally in The Boys universe, keeps the Vought/campus-institution satire, and matters to the parent show’s continuity. Watch first if you want more of the same machine.
- Invincible — closest for brutal superhero deconstruction. It swaps live-action satire for adult animation and family/legacy drama, but the shock violence and “what if gods wore capes?” suspicion line up strongly.
- Peacemaker — closest for rude, violent antihero comedy. It is less cynical about superheroes as a system than The Boys, but it has the same appetite for gore, dumb jokes, damaged people, and moral whiplash.
- Watchmen (HBO) — best prestige/political cousin. Less binge-trashy and far less comic, but it shares the premise that masks, power, policing, race, and myth-making are inseparable.
- Preacher — best Garth Ennis-adjacent chaos pick. Not a superhero show, but the blasphemous violence, absurdity, road-trip weirdness, and comic-book cruelty scratch a similar itch.
- Misfits — best scrappy British dark-comedy pick. Young offenders get powers; the tone is smaller, cheaper, and funnier, but it has the anti-gloss “superpowers are a problem” feel.
- Doom Patrol — best weird-team option. More surreal and emotionally sincere, but still a twisted comic-book ensemble of broken powered people.
- The Boys Presents: Diabolical — short-form side dish. Anthology quality varies, but it extends the same universe and tone.
How to choose
- Want the closest continuation: Gen V.
- Want the highest violence-to-superhero-deconstruction ratio: Invincible.
- Want funny, profane, live-action chaos: Peacemaker.
- Want politics and prestige instead of splatter-comedy: Watchmen.
- Want “The Boys, but supernatural/road-trip/blasphemous”: Preacher.
- Want lower-budget UK misfit energy: Misfits.
Major caveats
- Nothing exactly duplicates The Boys because its specific cocktail is Vought/capitalism satire plus celebrity-superhero rot plus gross-out comedy.
- Invincible is animated and more sincere; Peacemaker is DC and less institutionally cynical; Watchmen is more serious; Preacher is not superhero-focused.
- If you mainly like Homelander/Vought, prioritize Gen V and Invincible. If you mainly like Butcher-style vulgarity and dysfunction, prioritize Peacemaker, Preacher, and Misfits.
